MN CAN Prevention Force |
|

|
The Minnesota CAN (Child Abuse and Neglect) Prevention Force is a way for all Minnesotans to join together to support families and protect children. Members of the Minnesota CAN Prevention Force commit to take action to prevent child abuse and to share and learn from one another’s experiences in the process. The Minnesota CAN Prevention Force answers the question, “HOW CAN I help end child abuse?"
Here’s how in two steps:
1. Choose what you will do to prevent child abuse and neglect. See lots of ideas under “How you can help . . .” below.
2. Talk to our Blog: What's working? Tell us what happened when you did what you chose to do to help prevent abuse. What was the outcome? Do you think it worked? Or not? We will learn from one another and share our experiences as we go. Visit our blog to read comments and join in the conversation with other CAN Force members. You may also email us at pcamn@pcamn.org.

How you can help . . . |
|
|
|
In a minute you can . . .
· Call 1-800-CHILDREN for information about child abuse and neglect prevention
· Help a stressed out family in public. If you see a child being abused in public, do what you can to help like diverting the child’s attention, starting a conversation with the adult, or simply offering sympathy.
· Be a Nurturing Parent: Children need to know that they are special, loved and capable of following their dreams.
Follow this link for more actions you can take in a minute. If you have more ideas on what can be done in a minute to prevent child abuse and neglect, send us an email at pcamn@pcamn.org.
With more time you can . . . (follow the pink links)
· Organize and facilitate a Circle of Parents® support group in your area. Parent and children's support groups, known as Circle of Parents® Chapters, meet weekly across the state. All groups operate in a shared leadership model with parent participants providing non-judgmental support for parents and organized programming for children.
· The Children and Youth Work Group of A Minnesota Without Poverty (http://mnwithoutpoverty.org/) is recruiting citizen advocates to lobby for children in foster care and protective services. Additional advocates are needed in Ramsey County, where team members are already meeting with County Commissioners. The team will start meeting with state Senators and Representatives shortly. Individuals are also needed to fill out advocacy teams in Hennepin and Washington Counties. Estimated commitment is 5-10 hours per month. Volunteers will receive:
* Two state training sessions to understand child welfare programs
* An annual “report card” on their county’s performance
* Ongoing support to interpret the report card and to meet with elected officials
If interested contact Richard Gehrman at gehrm001@umn.edu.
· Volunteer with Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention efforts in your local community. For information on Child Abuse Prevention efforts in your county, check out the Minnesota Child Abuse Prevention Resource Map.
